Welcome to the heart of Périgord!

Périgueux, a city with a history
We discover Périgueux like we leaf through a history book. Come go back in time and discover our history. Numerous prehistoric testimonies exhibited at the Périgord Museum of Art and Archeology take you back to the origins of humanity. The city's heritage also takes you back to the sumptuous era of the Roman Empire with its numerous remains and its Gallo-Roman Vesunna Museum which let you judge the richness of the ancient city Vesunna. Vesunna, a city, but also the goddess of water who surprises us with her proud and majestic temple. Your journey through history has only just begun. At the bend of a medieval alley or while strolling from square to square, you come across half-timbered houses, residences with towers, signs of the wealth of the merchants of Périgueux. In this vast historic district, the cathedral sits at the top of the puy (hill) . This building, of which the Périgord residents are proud, has a part forming a Greek cross , topped with domes , of Byzantine inspiration. These various restorations make it an original building. Built on the roads to Saint-Jacques de Compostela(World Heritage Site since 1998) , Saint-Front Cathedral remains a major stopover for pilgrims. During your stroll through the centuries, you will also discover finely carved and decorated Renaissance mansions.

Périgueux and all around. Discover Greater Périgueux
      Move!

A greenway runs along the river "l'Isle" for 23 km through several towns in Greater Périgueux and connects the Voie Verte cycle route of the Vallée de l'Isle which runs to Bordeaux. This path offers you a calm and bucolic walking space, without ever leaving the riverside. In parallel with the Voie Verte, a 21 km canoe route passing through Périgueux allows you to discover the landscapes from the river in complete tranquility.

      Eat!
      Périgueux
, it is well known, is THE capital of “eating well”. In the surrounding area we find: truffle, duck, goose, porcini mushrooms, walnuts, strawberries... and even caviar! Every Wednesday and especially Saturday morning, gourmets meet at the large markets held in the center of the city and in front of the cathedral. In winter, the “marché au gras” and “marché aux truffles” are held where professionals from all over France supply the best restaurants. A quarter of an hour from Périgueux in Vergt , every year on the 3rd Sunday of May, the Fraise Brotherhood organizes a big Périgourdin meal for hundreds of guests, which ends with a giant strawberry tart. The Périgord raise is the only one in France to be protected by a PGI.

In Sorges , a town located 10 minutes north of Périgueux, the treasure is the truffle. An eco-museum is also dedicated to it, to learn everything from discovery to cooking.

I bit difficult to find, due to the winding streets in the old town. But staff very friendly, lots of information on the city and surrounding areas.
