Castle Barrière Historical monument of Périgueux

The Château Barrière is the only preserved example of knightly fortified houses, built in the Middle Ages by feudal families.

Located near the old Saint-Etienne de la Cité cathedral, at the end of one of the main roads of the medieval city that connected it to the town of Saint-Front, it bears the name of the Barrière family attested in 1245 and retains it despite the disappearance of the lineage in the 15th century. It consists of a main building flanked by two towers installed on the bases of the ancient rampart of which only the keep remains.

During the Renaissance, it was adorned with a polygonal staircase tower, a flamboyant Gothic entrance door with sculpted decoration, with a curly cabbage accolade, framed by pinnacles and cross windows. It was burned down in 1577 by the Protestants... The building was not referred to as a castle until the 17th century when it was in ruins. Property of the city, it has been classified as a historic monument since 1862.
