    • BIRON CASTLE: THE LARGEST OF THE NEW AQUITAINE CASTLES

The Château de Biron, a true jewel of the Périgord, spans nearly 1000 years of history. Listed as a historical monument, this imposing fortress was built in the Middle Ages and has evolved over the centuries. Owned by the family of the Dukes of Gontaut-Biron for eight centuries, the castle has withstood wars, sieges, and artistic transformations. Today, this immense building embodies the richness of the architectural heritage of the Périgord and continues to fascinate its visitors.

A place for exhibitions and film shoots

The Château de Biron is not only a historical site, it is also a place of art exhibitions of many artists. Renowned artists, such as Miro or Calder, have exhibited their works in its majestic rooms, mixing modernity and tradition. In addition, with its unique setting, the castle has served as a setting for many films, including Le Pacte des Loups, Jacquou le Croquant and Fortune de France.

Free or guided tours of the castle

Visitors to the Château de Biron can wander freely through the different areas of the castle. Each room promises you a journey through time. Climb up to the western rampart to admire the incredible panorama of the Périgord. Organized during the holidays, guided tours offer a more in-depth look at the history of the castle and its secrets, allowing you to better understand its evolution through the ages.

      Workshops during the holidays

During the school holidays, the castle offers interactive workshops for young and old. Whether it's introductions to calligraphy, the creation of coats of arms, or demonstrations of medieval dances, these activities are perfect for an immersive family experience!

      Events

      • From New York to Biron:
Thanks to a collaboration between the Dordogne Departmental Council, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Semitour Périgord, the Atelier des Fac-Similes du Périgord has just completed the replica of the Entombment of Christ made in the 15th century by a master image maker (unknown to this day). The sculpture is now back in its place at the heart of the seigneurial chapel of Biron. More information here!
      • The Holidays:
Every summer, the Château de Biron becomes the theater of Villégiatures, a festival of music and live shows. During this event, artists from all over Europe perform in an enchanting setting, under the stars and in the heart of this historic monument.

Absolutely gorgeous chateau built over centuries. Spectacular views as you arrive in and then once inside you have views of the valley. Lots of steps but nothing difficult although this site is inaccessible to wheelchair bound people. During the summer it’s quite packed and caters to kids. Wait until fall if you want a quieter pace. Well worth a visit. Spend time walking around the village and don’t forget to look back and up! Stunning place.

Well restored place with a lot of history. Some activities you can enjoy, such as medieval dancing. The shop sells locally produced items that were all really nice.
