Montignac

I start my tour by the right bank of the Vézère River, close to the church of Saint- Pierre-es-Lièns. It is an imposing church located in the centre of the square. Around the square are many houses as well as few restaurants. The inside of the church is as charming as the outside, with a simple decoration, simple but dotted with lovely candelabras providing all its charm.

Leaving the church, I have a viewpoint onto the ancient Montignac Castle, destroyed in the middle of the 19th century and former fiefdom of the counts of the Perigord. I carry on my way upward one of the main streets of the village.  arious shops open their doors, from the bakery to the convenience shop as well as the local specialties shops.

Carrying on straight and going in the direction of Thot and the Losse Castle, I turn on the left to take the stone bridge. However, I decide to do a little tour of the public garden, located on the right of the bridge. It is a well-designed and flowered green area! A small band stand located in the centre gives to the park a romantic and bohemian atmosphere that I particularly enjoy! It is a quiet little place, with benches from which you can admire the Vézère River and the passing canoes!

I cross the bridge stones and reach the left riverbank. This riverbank is as rich as the right one but has a few more shops. Restaurants, breweries, Ice cream shops, gifts shops, clothing shops… It is a very active dynamic riverbank. Next to the ancient Chapel of the priory, you can find the Tourist Office. Here, you can find a paper map of the village with all the remarkable monuments of Montignac, free audio-guide in four languages (French, English, Spanish and Dutch) and all the necessary useful information on Montignac and its surroundings. Note, the tickets to visit the Thot and Lascaux IV are not sold anymore at the tourist Office. You need to visit the relevant websites to book your  tickets!!

Night visits are organised in summer, in that case you need to book your tickets in the office. Magic and surprises are waiting for you! You will also find, in the ancient chapel of the priory with many arts and crafts. Clothes, jewels, glass…the artisans are present to share their know-how and show you many pieces that are as original as they are unique!

Montignac is also an important place for the outside sport activities. 28 hiking trails are available around the village, many leisure activities centres welcome you for canoeing on the Vézère River and you can admire the Vézère Valley from the sky thanks to the many paragliding to the many paragliding flights!! Finally, I end my day trip in Lascaux IV, Centre International de l’Art Pariétal. The site is located at 1km on foot from the town centre but many car parks are located close to the site. It is recommended to book your ticket in advance and preferably on internet. Thus, you will have no problems on arrival, and not much of a wait before your tour. Montignac is a charming and attracting village, dynamic and full of sport, fun and educational activities. Located upstream of the Vézère River, Montignac is an ideal stop to discover the black Perigord. Not far from the great sites and main villages of the Perigord to please all the family!
