On the banks of the Auvézère, announced by the rustling of the water, the forge of Savignac-Lédrier is one of the most remarkable sites of the Périgord Vert. Attested in 1521, it was classified as a Historic Monument in 1979.
Overlooked by the Renaissance castle of the ironmasters, this wood forge produced cast iron and iron using a blast furnace and a refinery until 1930, a wire drawing workshop producing long points, then mainly sardine can keys, continued until 1975.
The operation of the factory was based on the use of hydraulic energy and the employment of peasant labour, only in winter.
The site is accessible all year round, a path goes around the forge in an enchanting setting of water and forest. Visit videos are available on the route, to watch on the smartphone (free wifi on site).
