On the banks of the Auvézère, announced by the rustle of the water, the Savignac-Lédrier forge is one of the most remarkable sites of the Périgord vert. Certified in 1521, it was listed as a historical monument in 1979.
Overlooked by the Renaissance castle of the blacksmiths, this forge produced cast iron and iron using a blast furnace and a refinery until 1930, a wire mill producing long tips, then essentially sardine box keys, lasted until 1975.
The plant’s operation was based on the use of hydropower and the use of a peasant workforce, only in winter.
The site is accessible all year, a path goes around the forge in an enchanting setting of water and forest. Videos of the visit are available on the course, to be viewed on the smartphone (free wifi on site).
The reception is open from early June to late September for guided tours.
