Excideuil Castle Visit an 11th century fortress in Périgord Vert

The castle of Excideuil

In the north-east of the Périgord Vert, on a strategic site, from where the passage from Périgord to Limousin was once monitored, the castle of Excideuil was built by the Viscounts of Limoges who transferred their court there. This fortress built in the 11th century, remodeled in the 16th, has the only double square keep in Périgord, connected by a curtain wall. Besieged twice without success by Richard the Lionheart, it has known tragic moments, and marvelous moments with the delicate poetry of Giraut de Bornelh, one of the greatest troubadours according to Dante.

Come and feel the last echoes of love and fury from this emblematic place of the Middle Ages in Périgord.

The communal area is accessible free of charge all year round: you can wander freely along the ramparts and in the courtyard, admire the panorama over the Loue valley, and discover from June to September in the rooms of the castle, the exhibitions of painting, photography, sculpture, etc., organized by the Excit'œil association, in partnership with the Departmental Cultural Agency and the municipality.
