    • The Château de Salignac, an ambitious historical reconstruction project in the Périgord Noir

Since 2006, the Starckmann family has been working with the tedious goal of reconstructing a thousand-year-old castle. Passionate about old stones and history, they are restoring together the Château de Salignac, located in the same town as the Jardins d'Eyrignac near Sarlat-La-Canéda. Discover the crossing of a historical monument born in 1040, which tells you about its epic through a major construction site.

The Château de Salignac, a castle under restoration open to visitors near Montignac

For thirty years, the Château de Salignac has been under construction. Behind its majestic facade hides a conservation project that has become a family project, where everything is done to restore its 13th and 15th century appearance to one of the largest castrums in Périgord. With patience and meticulousness, the Starckmann family scrapes, remounts the walls and digs

the foundations of the castle themselves, simply leaving the major projects such as the frame to the craftsmen. Since 1040, the building has passed through several hands, has undergone extensions, collapses and redevelopments, before being bought in 2006, saved from ruin by enthusiasts. The various protections were not enough to preserve the castle, still under construction despite the evolution which allows an opening to visitors in 2021. Safeguarding this historical and cultural complex, this is the current mission.

The Château de Salignac, an immersion in medieval life in the Périgord Noir

Since 2021, the curious, history buffs and tourists have had the chance to discover the Château de Salignac, which has been under construction since 2017. The free visit gives access to

Touch, look, admire this magnificent castle at your own pace , the interior of which is beginning to be renovated in the spirit of the 15th century, and enjoy a view from above of Salignac. Between May and October, group visits can be organized for up to 50 people, before work resumes. Don't miss the summer event each year in July, a special weekend where life in a castle in the 13th century is perfectly reconstituted with the Opusculars. Nobles, damsels, ladies and troubadours invite you on a journey through time, punctuated by workshops and events for a historical immersion. Welcomed by the owner, who was selling tickets and described the project in English. We congratulate him and family on this most interesting project to preserve the patrimony of the region.

First mention of a castle dates back to the turn of the millennium. Typically enough the original wooden structures start to be replaced by stone buildings in the 11th and 12th centuries, to which date back the two dungeons of the Salignac castle. The Salignac Castle has seen a lot of historic changes, reaching its height in the 15th century after which it slowly decayed. The castle suffered damages during the Hundered Years War and the Wars of Religion. During the French Revolution villagers took over the castle, broken up and sold. By 1910 the main building and guardhouse were still standing. By 1912 the Salignac family bought back the castle and turned the remains into a stately manor, leveling most of the ruins and guardhouse to create a garden around three terraces on different levels. The castle was abandoned again, and by 2006 found new owners that set-out on a multi-generational journey to restore this historic monument. They worked 15 years to stabilize the site, replace structural beams and redo the ‘lauze’ roof. In 2021, 30 years after its last inhabitants left, the castle reopened its doors to the public. A visit gives you the unique opportunity to visit ‘a work in progress’. Much of the terraces are currently excavated, which allows for a sneak-peak under the surface. The spiral staircase provides access to the basement cut out from the rock, a room ‘left as they found it’, the central part currently under renovation, as well as a restored room with its ‘pisé’ floor and historic decor.
