    • The Château de Commarque, the discovery of an exceptional site in Périgord

Here is a unique castle in Dordogne which surprises with its height and its extent, since it represents a complex medieval ensemble in the heart of the Beune valley. Nestled in lush greenery, it takes you on a journey through time through several historical sites. Organize your visit to an authentic place 20 minutes from Sarlat and 10 from Eyzies, for a fun and educational moment in a surprising stone fortress .

The Château de Commarque, the essential visit to a medieval castrum in the Dordogne

The Château de Commarque has been under constant renovation since the start of its construction in the 12th century, until the 17th century when it was deserted and abandoned. It was in 1972 that Hubert Commarque bought this unique place and undertook its rescue through consolidation and restoration work. Now open for tours, the Château de Commarque reveals its history through its towers and dungeons built at the top of a cliff in a green and natural landscape. At the same time, a prehistoric cave and troglodyte habitats were discovered in this legendary valley with sumptuous panoramas. Coming to the Château de Commarque means going back in time and taking a lovely walk in the heart of nature.

Unbelievable experience rich with ancient history. This place was relatively off the grid until restoration started in the early 90s. The progressive nature of human ingenuity can be seen from the caves below to the castle above. A genuine treasure of this region. Beautiful trail walks adjacent to the site.

A bit off the beaten track, quite literally, and therefore relatively quiet. Except for Wednesday nights in summer, when the castle is lit up in bright lights and fireworks color the sky. Best to arrive to the light festival parking at around 19:45 and (contrary to the advice) climb up the castle directly when you get to the grounds. This takes little over half an hour and when you get back down, the lines for the food stands will have decreased significantly. There is not an abundance of stands and it’s generally burgers/hotdogs & fries, crêpes and the occasional duck sausage. Cards are accepted, but small stalls and (children’s) make-up artists only accept cash. The fireworks start at 23:00 so there is time to mount the castle once more before then if you want to see it in fairytale lighting up close. Best view on the fireworks is from the open space in front of the stalls. Bring a plaid to relax/eat on as there are few seats.

Touring Commarque is a worthwhile but steep scramble. It's a fascinating story of the history & renovation of an almost lost medieval castle & the valley it dominates. There is an interesting guide book in English which is worth getting. You do need to be able to climb lots of stairs up & down the tour. The car parks are a walk away. However it appears that you can drive almost to the entrance to drop people off pick up. Also there are no toilets at the castle. There is a notice at the car park & a loo. However there are picnic tables & a small cafe. There is a gateway at the highest point of the tour which does lead to an exit. However I don't know if this is used at all. Our visit was prior to high season.

This is an excellent castle which took us a good 2-3 hours to visit with our three-year-old son. The castle is predominantly ruined, but has good railings so is safe for young children. The man at...

This is actually not a castle, but rather the ruin of a communal fort that was housing several local Lords. Interesting visit since it is quite different from the other castles in the region.

Feels like a bit of trek to get here but definitely worth it. Whilst huge chunks of the castle are ruins there are some parts inside that have been refurbished and a huge effort has been made by the...
