Fanlac is a pretty village on the crest of the hills of the Vézère Valley . Between Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère and Montignac , it is the country of Jacquou-le-Croquant . There is a remarkable heritage , beautiful viewpoints and hiking departures. It is a perfect village for a peaceful Sunday stroll and why not a walk, with a magnificent panorama .

Jacquou le Croquant in Fanlac

Fanlac has always been a pretty village, but since 1969, it is also a place dear to the heart of the French, since it is the stronghold of Jacquou-le-Croquant . It was on this date that the soap opera of this young Périgordin's adventures appeared on television . One discovers there the life of Jacquou , who had become orphaned too early by the shenanigans of the Count of Nazac , and received by the priest Bonal who officiates at Fanlac. Thus Jacquou and his crunchy friends, also victims of the count's injustice, evolve in the village whose church , the beautiful ornate cross , the landscapes and the stone houses are often seen. Eugène le Roy , author of the book which inspired the soap, loved the Périgord and charming villages like Fanlac, walking through the narrow alleys and pretty plots, we bring to life his memory and that of his hero!

A typical Périgord village

One station is at the entrance of the village, which is located near Montignac-Lascaux,Bars (another pretty village) and the charming Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère. Fanlac is high up, we breathe and enjoy the surrounding landscape! It is a picturesque village , you will see there blond stone houses with sharp gables, covered with slate , a dark cut stone , widely used in the past but which is becoming rare: it requires a solid frame to support the weight of the 'together and know-how, for the implementation of this type of cover, is lost ... It is also a flowery village (1 flower), in spring it explodes hollyhocks and wild bouquets of all colors, which last until summer. In Autumn, Fanlac is adorned with yellow / orange colors. Go ahead and observe the beautiful littleborie-shapedmailboxes , these old dry stone huts typical of the southwest. On your left, an artisan is to be discovered, Kristof Mascher , leather worker who works with fish leather and has a great story to tell you.

On the main square , there is an old well , you can see that the stone around it is worn by the rope, which was used to raise the water for the villagers. Right next to it is a very beautiful cross decorated with sculptures dating from the 14th century. Continuing on, you arrive in front of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church , listed as a historic monument since 1970.

Continue your walk in the village: we feel that the locals have at heart to make it a pleasant place to live and visit. The houses are flowered , beautiful and well maintained with pretty sculptures to discover here and there. A small plot with a century-old tree and a stone bench offers you rest, before returning to the church. That's Fanlac, it's relaxing, small, charming and even in summer, it never gets too crowded.

Fanlac hike

Fanlac enjoys the presence of the beautiful forest of the barade on the territory of the town. I suggest a nice hike: When you arrive at the Well from the parking lot, turn right following the signs which indicate the available walking loops . Continue straight through the houses and along the way. We followed the loop of the village then, we continued on the GR36 . After 1 dirt road along the walnut, before turning to the left is a stone ordeal (a cross). Then the hike, which is just under 5km (achievable with the family with good shoes) descends into the hillside . We pass in front of, then we go along ancient dry stone walls , which probably demarcated the properties, from the time of viticulture . Continue straight ahead, until you reach a very wide castine path , you now face a beautiful set, a sort of old stone farmhouse visible behind a low wall.

The path is easy, we walk along the old walls

Turn right and go up the mountain path, then you pass the splendid surrounding wall of the Château d'Auberoche , private and not open to visitors. Be respectful near this property, which you pass along on the left. Continue until you reach a crossroads, we go up to the right to finish our loop. It climbs , it climbs to Fanlac. After about fifteen minutes, you will find the path with the Calvary and on your left the village.
